As you may be aware, Banaskantha and Patan are among the worst-hit districts in Gujarat due to heavy rains and flooding of the Banas and Sipu rivers. The huge quantum of water released from the Dantiwada and Sipu dams due to heavy rains in Rajasthan compounded the situation. The most affected talukas include Dhanera, Dantiwada, Deodar, Kankrej, Bhabhar, Amirgadh, Tharad and Palanpur, which received rainfall more than 150% as compare to the average annual rainfall in Banaskantha district and Radhanpur, Santalpur, Saraswati and Sami, which received the rainfall up to 168 % as compare to the average annual rainfall of Patan district. Flood waters revealed a massive tragedy in Dhanera and Kankrej talukas of Banaskantha district.

The situation is particularly grim in these affected talukas of Banaskantha and Patan districts. The relief and rescue work has been taken up in the flood affect area by Government and non-government agencies. The primary work of relief was taken up on high priority by various agencies. VIKSAT also done some emergency work and survey of some villages of Patan District. However, the rehabilitation work is more needed after the receding the flood water in affected villages of these district.

During the floods, besides the loss of lives and property, most agriculture land, existing crops, dry fodder and green fodder plots washed out and farm bunds have no existence. The farmer’s investment on sowing the crops, irrigation equipment also washed due to torrential rains. The local businesses and infrastructure have been critically damaged. The houses, land and animals along the rivers were critically damaged from the rising waters.

Considering the necessity and requirement of the area, VIKSAT has developed a plan for basic revival of livelihoods for the flood affected people in the villages through various development activities in 50 affected villages of these talukas.

VIKSAT seeks support in this endeavor aimed at rehabilitation of the rural communities affected by the floods. Your support is critical for an immediate and substantial impact in the flood affected villages.
