Poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon having
complex linkages with livelihoods, gender, water resources,
health, education, market access and income earning capacity,
inter alia. Hence, any poverty iradication strategy requires
multi-dimensional approach involving various stakeholders in
the process. This is what the United Nations has aimed to
achieve through its approach of the Millennium Development
Goals (MDGs). It has set up 8 MDGs to be achieved in specific
time frame in order to address the issue of poverty.
These MDGs need to be understood and
re-designed to suit the local context. The key challenge
concerning the implementation of projects related to the
achievement of these MDGs lies with the terms and methods of
engagement with the various stakeholders. In India, two
districts – one in Rajasthan and the other in Orissa - are
selected for localizing the MDGs on pilot basis. The learnings
from these areas will be used to frame the strategy for other
areas.
VIKSAT is implementing the project on
localizing MDGs in Dungarpur district.
The larger objective of the project is to raise the general
awareness level of the people in the district on issues
related with achieving the MDGs and to prepare them for
actively participating in the government programmes and
schemes connecting MDG themes.
Under the project, an MDG Information Resource
Centre is launched on January 7, 2007. VIKSAT has prepared a
booklet in Hindi on MDGs and key elements of the project which
was released on this day. During the project launch, an
exhibition of posters related to various MDG themes were also
displayed in the Centre.
